Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain ferromagnetic powder having a sharp coercive force distribution and high retentivity and useful as a recording element by using iron oxide magnetic powder particles as nucleus crystals and reacting a cobalt-contg. metal salt and an alkali in the presence of a water soluble salt of alginic acid.
CONSTITUTION: To an aqueous suspension of iron oxide magnetic powder are added a metal salt such as ferrous sulfate contg. a cobalt salt such as cobalt sulfate, an alkali such as caustic soda, and a water soluble salt of alginic acid. A water soluble salt of citric acid and a water soluble salt of tartaric acid may be added. They are reacted while agitating to form cobalt-contg. layers on the nucleus crystals of the iron oxide magnetic powder. By this method a metal compound contg. a fine cobalt compound is deposited, so the cobalt-contg. layers formed on the nucleus crystals are made dense.
