Abstract

1458623 Acicular cobalt-containing γ-ferric oxide BAYER AG 21 May 1974 [22 May 1973] 22602/74 Heading C1A A process for the production of a ferromagnetic, acicular, highly coercive cobaltcontaining iron oxide comprises adding a solution of a basic precipitant and an oxidizing agent (e.g. sodium hydroxide solution and air respectively) to an aqueous solution of iron (II) and cobalt (II) ions at a pH value of from 4 to 6 at such rates that the pH value of the solution varies by at most Œ0À2 pH units and the resulting precipitate of α-(Fe, Co)O.OH pigment is formed at a volume-time yield of 2 to 15 g./l./h., based on the suspension volume, and then drying, reducing and optionally reoxidizing the pigment. The solution of iron (II) and cobalt (II) ions may also contain other divalent metal ions, for example, divalent zinc, cadmium, manganese or lead ions, or any combination thereof. The product is suitable for incorporation into magnetic recording media.
