Abstract
1441183 Coated ferric oxide particles TDK ELECTRONIC CO 5 March 1974 [5 March 1973] 9838/74 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Magnetic recording particles comprise ferromagnetic, acicular iron oxide particles, e.g. gamma-Fe 2 O 3 or Fe 3 O 4 having an average length of 0À1 to 1 microns and a ratio of the length to the width of 5 : 1 to 20 : 1, having an adsorbed layer or a coating or cobalt hydroxide which may contain a small proportion of cobalt oxide. The amount of the cobalt hydroxide may be from 0À5 to 10 wt. per cent based on the iron oxide. A process for preparing such particles comprises mixing ferromagnetic acicular iron oxide particles with a cobalt salt in an aqueous alkaline solution, e.g. NaOH, KOH or NH 4 OH, heating the resulting slurry at a temperature below the boiling point thereof and separating the particles from the mixture.
