Abstract

1,055,538. Switch contacts. STACKPOLE CARBON CO. April 29, 1964 [Feb. 24, 1964], No. 17734/64. Heading H2B. A silver-tungsten electrical contact is made by firstly mixing finely divided tungsten with a temporary binder, placing the mixture in a mould and subjecting it to high-pressure (2 to 4 tons/sq. in.) to form a compact, heating the compact to a sintering temperature (1500‹ to 1700‹ C.) in a reducing atmosphere while supplying carbon to one side of the contact so that a thin layer of tungsten carbide is formed, and finally placing silver in contact with the compact and heating at 125‹ to, 1600‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere to cause the silver to infiltrate the body of the contact. Silicon, molybdenum or titanium may be used instead of tungsten and the silver may constitute from about 30 to about 65 volume per cent of the contact.
