Abstract
Compacted soldering material for joining materials difficult to wet comprises at least one of powdered titanium, zirconium or a hydrogen compound of titanium, zirconium or palladium, the particles being coated with solder or mixed with powdered solder to keep them apart and the material being compacted to 65% of the theoretical density. Several grain sizes are preferably used in the material and the hydrogen compound or titanium or zirconium, which may comprise up to 15% of the material, may have a maximum grain size of 50 microns and a preferred size of 0.1-10 microns. These grains may be coated with solder by electrodeposition or vapour precipitation. The compacts which may be produced by rolling may be heat treated in hydrogen to 200-600 DEG C. In an example 3% zirconium, 2% zirconium hydride and an alloy of 70% silver, 25% copper, 5% palladium are mixed in a ball mill and pressed to form a plate, the plate is positioned between parts of aluminium oxide ceramic and iron alloy and the assembly is heated in a vacuum furnace to 920 DEG C. Parts of ceramic or parts of ceramic glass and metal may be joined by the solder material.ALSO:Compacted soldering material for joining materials difficult to wet comprises at least one of powdered titanium, zirconium or a hydrogen compound of titanium, zirconium or palladium, the particles being coated with solder or mixed with powdered solder to keep them apart and the material being compacted to 65% of the theoretical density.
