Abstract
A sintered ceramic body such as alumina is coated with an adherent layer by applying a powdered mixture of a metal or metal compound and a ceramic which ceramic has a particle size less than 5 microns and a melting-point not lower than that of the ceramic body, and heating the body to below its melting-point. The ceramic powder may be alumina, magnesia or zirconia and form up to 50% by weight of the mixture. The metal powder preferably less than 5 microns is tungsten or molybdenum mixed with iron or manganese. Bonding is effected by heating to below 1400 DEG C. in a humid hydrogen - nitrogen atmosphere. A powder metal mixture of molybdenum and manganese may be applied to the first layer and bonded at 1300 DEG C. and a further powder metal layer of nickel may be applied and bonded at 900-1000 DEG C. The coated ceramic can then be soldered or brazed to another metallized ceramic or metal.
