Abstract

The surface of a ceramic body is metallized by coating it with particles of Mo and/or W and/or one or more of their reducible oxygen-containing compounds, together with particles of titanium hydride and/or zirconium hydride, and heating the coated surface to produce an at least partly vitrified layer containing titanium oxide and/or zirconium oxide with particles of Mo and/or W bonded to it. Preferably the weight of the Ti and Zr atoms lies in the range of 1-20% of the total metal atoms present in the coating. The particles may be applied as an intimate mixture in suspension, for example, in an ethyl lactate solution of pyroxylin: alternatively, they may be applied as separate layers of the different ingredients. The coated surface is heated at 1200-1600 DEG C. in an atmosphere non-oxidizing to Mo and W, e.g. in wet hydrogen, a rare gas or in vacuo. Among ceramic bodies which may be coated are those consisting wholly or mainly of alumina, steatite or forsterite. Bodies metallized in this way may be joined to metal bodies or to a metallized surface of another ceramic body by soldering or brazing. Alternatively, two ceramic bodies may be joined in a single operation by interposing a layer of Mo &c. between abutting surfaces of the bodies and then heating. The invention is particularly described with reference to the manufacture of a composite ceramic-metal envelope for a semi-conductor junction rectifier.
