Abstract
In the backward extrusion of aluminium or aluminium alloy the starting workpiece is formed by compacting and sintering. The powdered metal is cold compressed in a rotating die press and then sintered in a vacuum furnace or arc electric resistance furnace at 630 DEG C. After tumbling with zinc stearate which acts as a lubricant, the workpieces are backwardly cold-extruded in an eccentric press to produce small tubes or containers. These may be annealed subsequently. An example is given of an aluminium alloy of the following percentage composition: Al 99.34, Si 0.15, Fe 0.32, Al2O3 0.12; fats 0.04; moisture and volatile substances 0.03. Specific powder sizes, compacting pressures and compact densities are given.
