Abstract
In a process of producing a sintered metal or metal ceramic compact, an oxide carrier and a reducing agent are added to the powder mixture which is then compacted and heated to a relatively low temperature not substantially greater than that required to initiate an exothermic reaction between the oxide carrier and the reducing agent so that sintering is effected by the heat liberated by the exothermic reaction. The mixture contains 0.5-5% each of the oxide carrier and reducing agent which have a maximum grain size of 200 microns. The oxide carriers may be ferrous oxide, manganese oxide, cuprous oxide, potassium chlorate, sodium nitrate, calcium sulphate, chromates, bichromates, permanganates or the oxide of the metal powder being sintered; the reducing agents may be phosphorus, carbon, sulphur or compounds thereof, zinc or tin. The metal powder used as a maximum grain size of 500 microns and examples are given of the sintering of ferrous materials at 800-850 DEG C. and copper and copper zinc alloys at 550 DEG C. The sintering can be carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere and charcoal and phenol resins may also be added to the powder mixture in order to produce a porous structure after sintering.
