Abstract
A sintered copper or copper alloy body containing a dispersed refractory oxide such as MgO or BeO is formed from a powdered mixture of copper and/or copper oxide and/or a copper compound decomposable by heat to the oxide and a minor proportion, e.g. up to 2% of the refractory oxide, which mixture is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere to at least 900 DEG C.; then the oxides formed are heated in a reducing atmosphere prior to compacting and sintering. In the preferred method copper powder is mixed with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt which decomposes to the refractory oxide by heating, e.g. the nitrate, acetate, citrate or formate of magnesium, the slurry formed is dried, heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1000-1100 DEG C., and the mixture of oxides is crushed to minus 200 mesh. The powder is then heated in hydrogen at 300-350 DEG C., compacted at 10-40 t.s.i. and finally sintered at 800-1050 DEG C. in H2, N, argon or vacuum. The sintered compact is rolled, swaged and annealed to form wire or it may be extruded. The Provisional Specification also refers to the incorporation of the oxides of Ba, Ca and Sr as the refractory oxide phase.
