Abstract
A sintered composition consisting mainly of one or more of Fe, Cu, Co and not more than 2% of a dispersed refractory oxide phase is formed from a slurry of the metal powders and/or the metal oxides and/or compounds of said metals decomposable to the oxides, with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt decomposable by heat to form the refractory oxide, the water being evaporated from the slurry and the dried powder crushed and heated in hydrogen to form a powder mixture of the metal and the refractory oxide which is then pressed and sintered. The refractory oxide is one of MgO, BeO, Al2O3, TLO2, ZrO2, TiO2, the preferred content being 0.1-1.0%. The decomposable soluble salt may be a nitrate, acetate, citrate, or formate and the decomposable metal compound may be a carbonate or nitrate. In the examples, minus 325 mesh Cu powder is mixed with an aqueous solution of aluminium nitrate or magnesium nitrate, the slurry is dried at 120 DEG C. maximum, crushed to minus 200 mesh, heated at 350-750 DEG C. in hydrogen and after compacting at 35 tons p.s.i. sintering is effected at 800-1050 DEG C. in vacuum, hydrogen, nitrogen or argon. The compact may then be coined, forged or cold-rolled and annealed, swaged or rolled and then drawn into wire.
