Abstract
A sintered body consisting mainly of one or more of the metals Ni, Co and Fe and containing a dispersed refractory oxide such as Al2O3, MgO, B6O, Cr2O3, is formed from a powdered mixture of the metal and/or metal oxide and/or metal compound decomposable by heat to the oxide, and a minor proportion, e.g. up to 3%, of the refractory oxide which is heated to at least 900 DEG C. in an inert or oxidizing atmosphere to form mixed oxides which are then heated in a reducing atmosphere prior to compacting and sintering. In the preferred method the metal powder or metal oxide is mixed with an aqueous solution of a water soluble salt which decomposes to the refractory oxide by heating, e.g. the nitrate, acetate, citrate or formate of aluminium, the slurry formed is dried, heated at 900-1400 DEG C. in an oxidizing atmosphere and the mixture of oxides is then crushed to minus 200 mesh. The powdered oxides are heated in hydrogen at 300-500 DEG C. to form the metal/refractory oxide mixture which is then hydrostatically pressed at 25-40 t.s.i. and sintered in H2, N2, argon or vacuum at 1000-1400 DEG C. The sintered compact is hot rolled, swaged, cold drawn and annealed to form wire.
