Abstract

1,216,969. Sintered dispersion strengthened Al alloys. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Sept.25, 1969 [Oct.18, 1968], No.47167/69. Headings C7A and C7D. A sintered dispersion strengthened Al based body is made by wet ball milling in an inert atmosphere the powder Al or A1 alloy with an unstable oxygen compound with a free energy of formation per gm. atom of oxygen at 500‹ C. which is less than that of the A1 or A1 alloy and which reacts with the A1 to form a stable oxide, reacting the mixture in vacuum or an inert atmosphere at 450‹ to 500‹ C. and then working the mixture e.g. by compaction rolling and extrusion. The unstable compounds specified are Fe 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , amorphous SiO 2 , SnO 2 and colloidal boehmite (AlOOH). The ball milling liquid may be “-¢% stearic acid in petroleum ether, hexane, 1,1, 2 trichloro- 1, 2, 2 trifluoroethane and kerosene with or without camphor, methyl silicone and Al and Mg stearates. The mixtures specified are Al-11% Ce + 4% SiO 2 , Al-5À5% Mg+4% AlOOH, Al-1À75% Be +4% SiO 2 , Al+4% SiO 2 . The ball milled mixture is dried, reacted in argon or vacuum at 450‹ -500‹ C., compacted and hot extruded or rolled.
