1296379 Powder metallurgy BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP 24 Nov 1969 [25 Nov 1968 30 Oct 1969] 57321/69 Addition to 1226426 Heading C7D Sintered metal articles are made by compacting a powder mixture of a binder and a metal compound having a free energy of reaction with H 2 to form metal of less than +15 K.cals/gm atom of H 2 and at least 35 wt per cent of the compound having a particle size less than 10 microns. The compact is heated to below the sublimation or melting temperature of the metal and metal compound in a reducing gas other than one consisting essentially of H 2 to reduce the compound and then sintered. The reducing gas may be CO and the metal compounds may be oxides of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, and W, chlorides of Fe, Cr, and Ta and sulphides of Cu and Fe. A ball milled mixture of HCl oxide and cornstarch is extruded into 0À016" filaments, reduced at 1100‹F. in CO and then sintered in H 2 at 2100‹F.
