Abstract
In a process of forming sintered body of copper beryllium, a powder of a copper based alloy containing beryllium is mixed with copper powder, the mixture is compacted at a temperature below sintering and finally sintered. The beryllium content of the sintered body ranges from 0.4%-3.6% and may also contain up to 0.5% of cobalt and/or nickel. The starting mixture consists of 10%-90% of the copper based alloy and the balance copper powder which has an apparent density of 1.7 to 2.2 gm/cc. and at least 80% is minus 325 mesh. The mixture is compacted at 5-100 t.s.i. or it may be roll compacted into green strip. Sintering is carried out at 1500 DEG F.-1750 DEG F. in hydrogen, cracked ammonia, hydrocarbon gas, carbon monoxide, inert gas or vacuum. The sintered body may be cold rolled or hot worked, and heat treated.
