Abstract

A sintered porous body of aluminium is formed from a powder mixture of aluminium and up to 5% of powdered copper or up to 15% powdered magnesium which is shaped preferably at a maximum pressure of 7 t.s.i. and sintered at a temperature, preferably 550-625 DEG C., which is above the eutectic temperature but below the solidus for the composition and below the melting temperature of the constituent metals. The aluminium powder is preferably minus 100 plus 300 mesh Tyler with a maximum of 0.4% minus 325 mesh and is produced by atomizing molten aluminium in an atmosphere of argon, helium, neon, krypton or nitrogen. The aluminium powder may be coated with copper or magnesium and the mixture also includes 1-3% of sterotex as a binder. Sintering is carried out in hydrogen, nitrogen or an inert gas having a dew point of -80 DEG F. or lower. The sintered bodies have a porosity of 10-50% by volume and may be used as bearings or cigarette filters. The sintered bearing may be impreganted with oil before or after coining. Brass or copper plus nickel may also be added to the aluminium powder. The sintered product may be heat treated, water quenched and vacuum heat treated to produce an age hardened structure. In a modified method the mixed powders are sintered without any compaction to form a porous sinter cake which is coined, extruded or hot or cold rolled and impregnated with lead. The compacts are sintered in a tubular retort furnace, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), or a pot furnace or a continuous belt furnace. The green compacts are loaded into partitioned boats containing aluminium powder which acts as a getter.
