Abstract

1532641 Alloy steel powder BRITISH STEEL CORP 27 April 1976 [28 April 1975] 17622/75 Heading C7A A finely divided alloy steel powder consists of The powder is produced by water atomization of a steel melt, followed by annealing in hydrogen or cracked ammonia enriched by CO or a hydrocarbon gas at 700 - 900‹C and subsequently sintering at 900-1300‹C typically 1150‹C in a similar atmosphere with a dewpoint of -10‹C max to reduce the oxygen content to below 250 p.p.m. Graphite additions may be made after annealing to compensate for Carbon losses during sintering. The powder may be compacted into the required shape i.e. automotive shafts, gears, bearings etc., by isostatic pressing or die compaction, and densified to 99% + of theoretical density by hot pressing, rolling, forging or extruding, and subsequently heat treated at 800-860‹C, quenching and tempering to give Hv of 800 minimum. Alternatively, sintering may be carried out at 1250‹C under reduced pressure conditions, either as a continuous process or in a batch furnace.
