Abstract
1415015 Metal powder sucrose mixtures for powder metallurgy USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 29 Nov 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 55400/73 Heading C7D A powder mixture of a metal e.g. iron or steel, Cu, Mo or Ni, and at least 1.5 wt per cent sucrose is loosely packed in a mould and heated to at least 350F but below the sintering temperature to form a baked preform suitable for further processing. Alternatively a powder mixture of metal and sufficient sucrose to carbonize the metal and increase the carbon content > 0.04% is loosely packed in a mould and sintered. In another embodiment sufficient sucrose is added to reduce the oxygen content of iron powder from above 200 ppm. to below 200 ppm, and sintering the loose powder in a mould at 1200-2400F. In the case of the low temperature baking at 350-500F the mould may be rubber, plastics or paper and the baked preform may then be sintered and directly forged or re-heated after sintering and forged. Similarly the preforms sintered in metal or ceramic moulds are either forged directly or re-heated and forged. The process is particularly applicable to water atomized ferrous powders which are sintered and forged into differential gears.
