Abstract
1,210,856. Sintered tool steel. AEROJET - GENERAL CORP. July 30, 1968 [July 31, 1967; July 3, 1968], No.36293/68. Heading C7D. A sintered tool steel is made from irregularly shaped fractured pre-alloyed tool steel particles made by impact pulverizing, the particles being hydrogen reduced and cooled at a rate less than 300‹ F . /hour, to give a Rc hardness not more than 55 cold pressed at e.g. 60, 000 - 100, 000 p.s.i. and sintered to a theoretical density of at least 85%. 0À1-1% by weight of carbon may be added to the particles prior to hydrogen reduction at 1750‹ - 1875‹F. and compaction may be affected mechanically, isostatically or by explosion to a green density of 55-86%. Sintering is effected in hydrogen or a carbonaceous atmosphere at 2150‹-2350‹F. or by hot rolling at 2000-2200‹ F. or explosively compacted. Liquid phase sintering may be carried out with the addition of MoS2 or VB2 (about 0À1% by weight) or up to 5% of metal halides or 0À25% of Ni, Cn or Co to the tool steel powder. The sintered body is worked as by swaging, forging or rolling e.g. at 1800-2000‹ F. Heat treatment is carried out by oil quenching from 2200‹ F. and double tempering at 1050‹F. After the oil quench super cooling in liquid Nz at -320‹ F. may be carried out.
