Abstract

1412415 Sintering metals in a halide atmosphere UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Feb 1973 [3 Dec 1971] 56321/71 Heading C7D A mixture of a metal powder and a minor proportion of another metal powder which forms a solid solution with the first is compacted, heated in a halide vapour above the melting temperature of the formed metal halide and finally sintered and cooled in a reducing atmosphere. The main metal is preferably Fe or an Fe base alloy such as stainless steel and the added metal having an atomic size no more than 15% larger than the main metal may be Sb, Ti, Mo, Sn, Ta, Zn, W. The mesh size of the minor metal additive is preferably smaller than the mesh size of the main metal e.g. mixture of - 200 mesh Fe powder and <0.7 wt per cent - 100 mesh Sn powder. The Fe-Sn compacted mixture was heated in a furnace containing NHuCl or NHuF crystals to within 100‹C of the sintering temperatures, 900- 1200‹C, and then sintered for about 10 minutes at 900-1200‹C in hydrogen. The sintered bodies have improved tensile strength.
