Abstract

A sintered metallic body consists of a major constituent composed of a basis metal or an alloy of two or more basis metals, and a minor constituent which is a complex composed of the atoms of a metal and a non-metal which are capable of forming a compound substantially insoluble in the major constituent or of two or more such complexes, said complex or complexes having been formed during sintering and being in a state of incipient precipitation in zones distributed uniformly throughout the major constituent the said state being stable at and below the sintering temperature. The basis metal or metals may be one or more of the metals Fe, Al, Cr, Co, Cu, Mg, Mo, Ni, Ta, Ti, W, Zr and the minor constituent one or more of the silicides, borides, nitrides, carbides and oxides of Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W and Te. The body is preferably made by sintering together mixed powders in which the metal and non-metal of the minor constituent are present as compounds or alloys of each with one or other of the basis metals. For example a mixture of powders of Ni-Ti alloy, Ni-Si alloy and Ni may be sintered to give a body containing a Ti-Si complex. A body containing a Ti-B complex may be made similarly. The complex or complexes preferably from 2-10 per cent of the metallic body. The production of a Co-W alloy containing a Ti-B complex under similar conditions is referred to in the Provisional Specifications.
