Abstract
A hot-worked aluminium-base alloy powder article free from oxide except as an incidental impurity is formed from atomized powder of an aluminium alloy containing at least 70% of aluminium, 2.5-20% iron, and 0-10% of one or more of manganese, nickel, cobalt, chromium, titanium, zirconium and vanadium, the iron-containing constituent being present in the hot-worked article being in the form of fine uniformly distributed insoluble particles having a maximum thickness of 0.4 micron. Particles of alloy passing through a 100 mesh sieve, and the majority passing through a 200 mesh sieve, are formed by drastically chilling a spray of molten alloy. The powder is compressed at a temperature in the range 700-900 DEG F., e.g. at 30,000-120,000 p.s.i. The compact is then hot-worked as by extrusion, forging or rolling, preferably in the same temperature range. A cold-working operation may follow. Specifications 404,463 and 625,364 are referred to.
