538,227. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metals ; compositions containing metals. OUBRIDGE, W. A. Dec. 12, 1939, No. 32011. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group V] Metal articles or masses having the properties of grey iron, such as piston rings, valve guides, cylinders and valve seat inserts and bearing bushes are made by sintering a mixture of soft and hard iron powders and 1-3 per cent. of graphite, with or without a bonding agent such as ferrophosphorus, and with or without the addition of a suitable proportion of any of the metals nickel, chromium, copper, molybdenum, vanadium, titanium, and manganese. The soft iron powder may be substantially pure iron and may constitute the greater proportion of the mixture, and the hard iron powder may be a white cast iron. Piston rings made by the process may be coated with a non-ferrous alloy such as bronze ; or the articles may have a facing, core, or backing of solid metal or alloy.
