Abstract
A catalyst for the oxidation of ammonia comprises platinum or an alloy thereof, particularly a platinum-rhodium alloy, and is prepared by sintering a finely-divided mixture of the metal or alloy and one or more oxides which are stable under the sintering conditions, which may involve the pressure of a reducing gas. Alloys containing up to 10 per cent of rhodium are suitable, and the proportion of oxide may be from 0.01 to 10 per cent. Specified examples of oxides are those of (1) thorium; (2) one or more of calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium and beryllium; (3) one or more of zirconium, hafnium, cerium, and titanium; (4) aluminium; (5) one or more rare earth metals; (6) one or more metals of the fifth group; and (7) chromium sesquioxide. The composted and sintered agglomerate is formed into wire, sheet, gauze, &c.
