Abstract
An oxidation catalyst, useful for treating exhaust gases from I.C. engines, comprises a major proportion of Al2O3, between 3 and 30% V2O5 and between 0,001 and 10% of a platinum group metal (i.e. Pt. Pd, Rh, Ru, Os or Ir) and/or between 0,1 and 10% of a copper compound. The catalyst may be a mixture of catalytic components or may be a single homogeneous catalyst composition. Specified copper compounds are copper oxide and copper chromite. The catalyst may be prepared by impregnating Al2O3 may be impregnated with V2O5 on the one hand and either a platinum group metal or copper on the other hand before combining the separately impregnated Al2O3 portions in a suitable ratio. The Al2O3 used in preparing the catalyst is preferably g -Al2O3, derived from Al2O3 hydrogels, Al2O3 xerogels, Al2O3H2O or sintered Al2O3. The preparation of a suitable Al2O3 is described in which Al2O3 is precipitated from an alkali metal aluminate, e.g. Na2Al2O4 or K2Al2O4, by addition of H2SO4 or (NH4)2SO4. Such an alumina has a low apparent bulk density. Alternatively "silica stabilized" Al2O3, i.e. Al2O3 containing 1-8% SiO2, may be used in preparing the catalysts described above. The catalyst may be pelleted or extended into any described shape. Deposition of copper and or platinum group metals on Al2O3 may be effected by use of conventional soluble salts, e.g. Cu(No3)2 and H2PtCl6. Examples are given. Specification 686,495 and U.S.A.
