Abstract

[Also in Division C2] A catalyst composition comprises (a) support material, (b) from 0.05 to 1.0 weight per cent of palladium, (c) from 2.0 to 15.0 weight per cent of copper-II-chloride and (d) from 0.2 to 5.0 weight per cent of at least one alkali metal oxide and/or alkali metal chloride, for example potassium oxide and/or potassium chloride. The support material may be gamma alumina having a surface area of 280 square metres per gram, a mean pore diameter of 40 Angstroms and a particle size of from 0.8 to 1.2 mm. The catalyst composition may be prepared by a method which comprises impregnating support material with an aqueous solution of a thermally decomposable salt of palladium, for example palladium-II-chloride, converting the salt to elemental palladium at elevated temperature, for example by heating the impregnated support material initially in air to convert the salt to oxide and thereafter in hydrogen to reduce the oxide to metal, and thereafter impregnating the support material, for example sequentially and in either order, with an aqueous solution of copper-II-chloride and with an aqueous solution of a hydroxide or chloride of an alkali metal. The resulting catalyst composition may be subjected to calcination, for example at 450‹C, and/or to treatment with hydrogen, for example at 450‹C. The catalyst composition may be used, for example in admixture with particles of quartz, in the preparation of allyl chloride from propene, hydrogen chloride and oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen, for example air.
