Abstract

The oxygen content of V, Mo, W, Ta, Nb and alloys thereof, which have been reduced from their oxides by an aluminothermic reaction, is reduced by arc-melting the refractory metal under vacuum or inert gas in the presence of Al. The Al may be present in the refractory metal as a deliberate alloying element or as an impurity or it may be added before or after melting.
