Abstract

1,158,686. Internal oxidation of alloys. SIEMENS A. G. Aug. 10, 1967 [Aug. 12, 1966], No. 36838/67. Heading C7D. An alloy powder, mixture of alloy powders, or a partially alloyed metal powder mixture formed of two or more metals of different nobilities is internally oxidized by oxygen derived from a mixture of the more or most noble metal and an oxide thereof, the alloy powder and metal/oxide mixture being in different but communicating zones of a heated reaction system. As shown, alloy powder 4 and metal/oxide mixture 6 are located in zones 3, 5 of tube 1, the zones being separated by apertured partition 2. The tube is exhausted or flushed out through pipe 7 and then rotated in a furnace. In other embodiments (a) the alloy powder is mechanically agitated during treatment, and (b) the alloy powder and metal/oxide mixture are in separate containers, oxygen being carried in an inert gas stream into the bottom of the alloy powder container thus creating a fluidized bed of alloy powder. Alloy powders which may be treated are Cu-Al, Cu-Ti, Ni-Al, Ni-Zr and Fe-Si. Suitable metal/oxide mixtures are Cu- Cu 2 O, Ni-NiO and Fe-Fe 2 O 3 .
