Abstract

1479312 Hot forging alloy powders UDDEHOLMS AB 17 Jan 1975 [17 Jan 2 April 1974] 02274/74 and 14610/74 Heading C7D Fe, Ni or Co based alloy bar stock is formed by filling a capsule, lined with an oxygen getter, with the alloy powder and an oxygen carrier and then progressively hot forging the hermetically sealed capsule at 800-1250‹C. The oxygen getter may be Al, Cu, Mg, Ti or Fe Ti and the oxygen carrier may be carbon or a halide e.g. a halide of one of the metals present in the alloy powder. The alloy powders may be prepared by atomizing an alloy melt either with an inert gas or a water spray and the powder may contain up to 1000 ppm. oxygen. 0À03-0À15% of an oxygen carrier such as carbon is added to the powder and in one embodiment the mixture of alloy powder and carbon is fed into the centre of a steel capsule from a conduit while an oxygen getter powder is fed along the walls of the capsule from another conduit. The capsule is then hermetically sealed by pressing together the open ends without evacuating the air from the capsule, heated to 800-1250‹C and then hot forged in a die. The forged capsule is then hot-rolled, the steel casing being removed either before or after rolling. Other oxygen carriers used in place of carbon may be FeCl 2 , FeCl 3 , CuCl 2 or CuCl 3 .
