Abstract
PURPOSE: To extremely lower the nitrogen content of the chromium-containing metal or alloy to produce an extremely low-nitrogen product by heating metallic chromium, ferrochromium or the like to a specified temperature together with alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal and halide thereof as a flux.
CONSTITUTION: A powder of metallic chromium, ferrochromium or the like with a particle size of 10W200 mesh, together with one or more alkali metals and/or alkaline earth metals and one or more halides thereof as the flux, is heated in an Ar gas atmosphere at 800W1,000°C for 30minW5hr and is then cooled in Ar gas or a gas having an extremely low nitrogen partial pressure to reduce the nitrogen content, thereby producing the extremely low-nitrogen product. In this case, not more than 2.0S tons of the chromium-containing material is placed in a reaction vessel having a horizontal cross-sectional area of not greater than 0.2m2 and is treated in situ. As the flux, the alkali or alkaline earth metal such as Ca, Mg, etc. is used in an amount of not less than 5 times of that of the nitrogen to be removed, while the halide such as CaCl2, MgCl2, NaCl, etc. is used in an amount of 3W30% of the metal to be treated. After the treatment, water is added to remove the used flux from the powdery chromium-containing metal.
