Abstract

PURPOSE: An additive of extremely high compression density and strength for molten iron, which is composed of the compressed body of the mixture which contains Mg, SiC, Ba+Ca, graphite and rare earth metals composed of powder and granules of respectively the specified grain sizes at respectively the specified ratios and is constituted by iron for the remainder.
CONSTITUTION: The mixture composed of 5W20% Mg, 2W10% SiC, 0.5W1.2% (Ba+Ca), 1W4% graphite, 0.5W5% rare earth metals (RE) and Fe for the remainder, respectively based on weight, is forcefully press-inserted between two rollers. This mixture is continuously compression-molded to produce the intended additive for molten iron. In this case, ≥30% Mg powder and granules used is made 0.8W4mm, ≤70% is made ≤80%. The grain sizes of SiC are made ≤0.2mm. For the Ba or Ca component, the powder of Ba-Ca-Si alloy or Ca-Si alloy is used at ≤0.3mm, and for the RE component, Fe-Si-RE alloy or other RE alloy or RE fluoride is used and the grain size thereof is made ≤5mm. For the iron powder, the one which is ≥97% in purity, is ≤0.5% in C content and is ≥5% having 0.6W3mm grain sizes is used.
