Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the impact value of nodular graphite cast iron in an ultra low temp. zone by lowering the Si and Mn contents of nodular graphite cast iron having ferrite matrix structure and by controlling impurity elements hindering ferrite conversion to a certain range.
CONSTITUTION: This nodular graphite cast iron having ferrite matrix and consisting of, by wt., 3.0W4.0% C, 1.5W2.3% Si, ≤0.20% Mn, ≤0.025% P, ≤0.015% S, 0.060% Mg and the balance Fe and a little impurities has ≥1.8kg.m/cm2 impact value at -100°C according to JIS No.Z22023 impact test piece. Total T of the product of the wt. percentage of each impure element and its coefficient is ≤5.0 as shown by the equation. This cast iron has such a high impact value in an ultra low temp. zone.
