Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide sufficient wear resistance and stainlessness to a horseshoe by adding a little graphite to starting material powder based on iron and contg. a specified amt. of chromium after which they are mixed, compacted in an appropriate density ratio, and sintered to facilitate forging of the resulting horseshoe.
CONSTITUTION: Starting material powder based on iron and contg. 8W20wt% chromium is used. As this powder 13W18 chromium alloy powder is used, and chromium powder or about 40W70% chromium-contg. alloy powder may be added to iron dust. 0.01W0.1% Graphite is added to this starting material powder, mixed, filled in dies, and compacted so that the density ratio becomes 80W95% while avoiding a too low ratio and a too high ratio. This green compact is then sintered at a temp. slightly higher than a usual sintering temp. in a vacuum or a neutral or reducing gas atmosphere. Since the resulting horseshoe is porous and exhibits low rigidity, it is easily hot worked by forging.
