Abstract

Rods and semi-finished products of Fe, Ni or Co based alloy are made by a powder metallurgy method by providing adjacent the inner walls of a hollow container a reducing material which has the capacity to bind with oxygen to form a solid compound greater than the material of the alloy. The container is filled with alloy powder in which there is included an oxygen carrier and hermetically sealed. The container is heated to 900-1200 degrees C and forged. During this stage the oxygen carrier combines with oxygen in the alloy powders, diffuses into the layer of reducing material and there gives up its oxygen to the reducing material. A non-porous coherent product is obtd. without recourse to vacuum apparatus or the need to use a starting powder of very low oxygen content.
