Abstract

1450039 Deoxidizing powder compacts; vacuum sintering R J DAIN and H FORD 15 Nov 1973 [15 Aug 1972 25 Aug 1972] 38045/72 and 39779/72 Heading C7D Metal powder containing combined or added carbon is compacted and then deoxidized to <500 p.p.m. oxygen by heating in a vacuum chamber into which an inert gas is intermittently injected and the chamber then re-evacuated. In a particular embodiment a ferrous powder compact is heated at 850‹-1300‹C whereby sintering is simultaneously effected; the chamber may be intermittently back-filled with argon or helium to a pressure of 500 Torr.
