1457293 Sintered tool steel H FORD and R J DAIN 22 Feb 1974 [5 March 1973] 10525/73 Heading C7D In the production of a sintered tool steel article, the tool steel powder (e.g. gas or water atomized) is compacted at 60,000-150,000 psi, the resulting compact is vacuum heated to reduce its oxygen level to below 500 ppm and finally liquid-phase sintered to a density of at least 90% theoretical. In the example, an atomized tool steel powder of the following composition by wt: was compacted isostatically at 100,000 psi in a sealed canister, the compact was then removed and heated to 1150‹C under vacuum, prior to liquid-phase sintering at 1260‹C in Ar.
