Abstract
1470054 Silicon nitride BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 20 March 1974 [2 April 1973] 15769/73 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Components may be prepared by moulding and reaction sintering in an appropriate atmosphere materials comprising 55 to 85% by volume of powdered metal or silicon, and 15 to 45% by volume of a binder comprising polyvinyl butyral and dibutyl phthalate plasticizer in proportions 2/3 : 1 to 2 : 1 by volume. The material may be injected into a die cavity and the component thus formed heated to remove the plasticizer, machined if necessary and reaction sintered in a nitrogen atmosphere. In an example a silicon nitride component is produced from a material comprising powdered silicon. The components may be compressor or turbine blades for gas turbine engines.
