Abstract

1304291 Isostatic hot pressing CORNING GLASS WORKS 9 Sept 1970 43079/70 Heading C7D [Also in Division C1] Shaped bodies of sinterable particulate material are densified by an initial firing in vacuo or in a gas which is diffusible or soluble with respect to the material of the body, e.g. H 2 to a state in which it is substantially free of inter-connecting porosity (communicating between points spaced on the surface of the body) while still possessing closed porosity (not communicating with the surface of the body), followed by a further firing under the isostatic pressing action of an inert gas which is incapable of diffusing into or permeating the body e.g. helium, argon and nitrogen, at a pressure of at least 1000 psi in immediate contact with the body. Bodies may be formed of refractory metals, refractory metal oxides, graphite, carbides or cermets and an example describes the treatment of alumina.
