Abstract

944,578. Aircraft structures. BENDIX CORPORATION. June 22, 1961 [June 28, 1960], No. 22665/61. Heading B7W. [Also in Divisions F1, F2 and F3] A material capable of use in an oxidizing atmosphere at high temperatures, and which may be used for jet elevators and leading edge sections of aircraft wings, comprises a metallic honeycomb 12 into which powdered ceramic or ike refractory material is pressed to form a series of juxtaposed blocks 10 separated by the honeycomb, the latter being deformed by the pressure as indicated, and an overlying layer 16, a metallic backing flame sprayed on to the back surface, and a protective layer of metal 18 which is flame sprayed on to the active surface. The layer 16 is partially sintered before the layer 18 is flame sprayed on to it, further sintering occurring during use, during which the layer 18 oxidizes and acts as a flux. The metallic honeycomb is of stainless steel and the refractory material is preferably composed of 50% copper, 5% molybdenum, 5% " Monol " (Registered Trade Mark), 10% iron, 15% mullite and 15% graphite.
