Abstract
A wear resistant surface is formed by brazing a layer of refractory particles such as WC, TiC, TaC, SiC, B4C, Al2O3 and MgO with a particle size greater than 1/16 inch, to a backing member such as nickel or "Inconel" (Registered Trade Mark) and flame spraying or sintering a matrix layer over the refractory particles. The refractory particles with a particle size of 1/16 -\ba1/8 inch are brazed to the backing with copper powder and a flux by heating in cracked ammonia to 2100 DEG F. The flame sprayed matrix may be a powder mixture of 90% Cu/10% Ni or a powder mixture of 52.5% Ni, 13.8% Cr, 0.75% B, 2.28% Si, 0.67% Fe and 30% WC. Alternatively the powdered matrix may be applied by pressing and sintering.
