Abstract

819,086. Powder metallurgy. STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS A. B. Jan. 4, 1957 [Nov. 26, 1956], No. 426/57. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXII] A method of producing a bit for cutting tools comprises forming a first mass consisting essentially of one or more powdered metal oxides of the ceramic type and a second mass of one or more powdered metals, the materials being such that both masses can be sintered at the same temperature; placing the masses together so that there is a surface of contact between them while each mass has at least one free surface; and heating the masses while compressing them together to such temperature that the masses are individually sintered and also sintered together, the sintered first mass constituting a cutting part and the second mass a brazing part which may be affixed to a support by brazing. An intermediate mass comprising a mixture of powdered ceramic oxide and e.g. 40-60 per cent powdered metal, sinterable at the same temperature as the first and second masses, may be used. In an example, a cutting layer 1 comprises by weight 90 per cent alumina, 5 per cent quartz, 5 per cent magnesium oxide; an intermediate layer 2 comprises 50 per cent W, 12 per cent Co, 34 per cent alumina, 2 per cent quartz, 2 per cent magnesium oxide; and the metal or brazing layer 3 comprises 80 per cent W, 20 per cent Co. The whole was sintered under pressure at approximately 1600‹C. Brazing to a supporting element may be by a normal method using e.g. ,Cu-Ag solder; whilst the metal mixture may include Ni and/or Fe besides or in addition to Co.
