Abstract

706,486. Forging; powder metallurgy. DIFFUSION ALLOYS, Ltd. Jan. 7, 1952 [Jan. 9, 1951], No. 656/51. Class 83 (4) Metal articles, preferably of nickel or steel are made by compressing and sintering metal fibres, wires or turnings, with or without the addition of metal powder, the sintering process being combined with a metallic diffusion process such as the chromium diffusion process described in Specification 646,637, [Group II]. In one example, steel wool was compacted at 25 tons per square inch in a mould of 4 inches diameter to produce a disc <SP>1</SP>/ 16 inch thick, which was packed in a mixture containing 65 per cent ferrochrome, 34.8 per cent kaolin and the balance ammonium iodide and sintered for two hours at 800‹ C. and three hours at 1150‹ C. If greater density is required, the steel wool may be first soaked in a paste of metal powder in a liquid medium. Sheets may be obtained by rolling the steel wool before the sintering and metal diffusion process. In another example a closely interwoven mass of fine gauge steel wire was compressed at 20 tons per square inch before the sintering and diffusion step. Specification 706,476 also is referred to.
