Abstract

Carbide substrate (a sintered carbide of W, Ti and/or Ta in a metal matrix, pref. Co or Fe, or Ni) is coated from the vapour phase with a dense, 1-20 mu thick layer of alpha-Al2O3, strongly adhering to the substrate and having wear resistance equal to that of alumina-base cutting tools; whilst the body possesses the high strength and hardness of sintered carbide.
