Abstract

1386551 Filaments with Ti C coating; hotpressed fibrous bodies UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 4 Jan 1973 [5 Jan 1972] 501/73 Headings C7D and C7F A filament having a surface layer of Si C is coated with Ti C. The filament may be Si C, or a Si C coating on C or B, and Ti C is deposited from a Ti Cl 4 /CH 4 /H 2 mixture as the heated filament passes through a reaction chamber. The resulting filament may be used as reinforcement in a Ti or Ni matrix, the composite body being made by hot-pressing the filament, e.g. in Ti powder at 900‹C, 350 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and for 30 min., or in Ni powder at 850‹C and 350 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> for 3 minutes.
