Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase bonding strength of coating layers, by forming an intermediate layer of Al carbide in coating the surface of super-hard alloy with an inner layer of carbide, nitride etc. of Ti, Zr etc. and an outer layer of oxide etc. of Al. CONSTITUTION:The surface of super hard alloy, bonded with bonding material such as carbide, nitride of IVa, Va, VIa group metals of the periodic table, is coated with an inner layer 0.6-10mu in thickness composed of one member, or a composition contg. two or more members, selected from the group consisting of carbides, nitrides, and oxides of Ti, Zr, Hf and W. On the surface of the inner layer is formed an intermediate layer of Al carbide 0.1-5mu in thickness, which is further coated with an outer layer 0.5-10mu in thickness composed of oxide or oxy-nitride of Al. If necessary, the outer layer is coated with an outermost layer 0.5-2mu in thickness composed of carbide, nitride, oxide of Ti individually or of a composition of these materials.
