Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a coated superhard alloy member for a tool having high bonding strength and holding superior cutting performance by using TiC and Ti(BN) layers as an inner layer for an outer alumina layer when a superhard alloy is coated. CONSTITUTION:A superhard alloy is coated with a TiC layer having about 0.5- 9mum thickness, a Ti(BN) layer having about 0.2-3mum thickness, and an outermost aluminma layer having 0.5-2mum thickness in succession. When the Ti(BN) layer is made of Ti(BxN1-x), the composition is adjusted to 0.1<=x<=0.35. This under coat gives high hardness and minimizes the damage of the alumina layer, so a coated superhard alloy member having optimum cutting performance, etc. is obtd.
