Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the bond strength at the interface of a cutting edge layer of a cubic boron-nitride-base sintered material and a holding layer of stellite and improve machining life by forming a composite sintered piece for cutting edge into a laminated composite body of said cutting edge layer and holding layer.
CONSTITUTION: A composite sintered piece for cutting edge is constituted of a laminated composite body of a cutting edge layer comprising a cubic boron-nitride-base sintered material and a holding layer comprising 30% Cr, 10% W, 2% C, and Co and unavoidable impurities for the remainder, called stellite. This yields the holding layer having superior toughness and heat and abrasion resistances, enhances the bond strength of the cutting edge layer and the holding layer and makes this piece suitable for machining of hard-to-machine materials.
