Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve toughness, workability, and abrasion resistance of a cutting tool by adopting a material for a cutting tool prepd. by mixing carbide, nitride of Ti, Zr, or Cr, or a solid soln. thereof with Al2O3 and ZrO2 in a specified proportion. CONSTITUTION:A shaft shaped ceramic cutting tool consisting at least one kind of carbide or nitride of Ti, Zr, or Cr, or a solid soln. thereof together with Al2O3 and ZrO2 is provided, wherein the proportion of carbide, nitride, of Ti, Zr, or Cr or a solid soln. thereof basing on the content of Al2O3 is 5-95vol.% and the content of ZrO2 basing on the whole body of the cutting tool is 5-35vol.%. In the above described compsn. the compositional ratio of Cr basing on Ti and Zr may be defined by 1-40% by atomic fraction. In this case, compds. of Cr function as a sintering accelerator in the stage of sintering, but the function is eliminated when the atomic ratio Ti,Zr/Cr is <99/1, so the texture of a sintered body obtd. by sintering under normal pressure is prevented from becoming compact. When the atomic ratio exceeds 1/99, deterioration of abrasion resistance of a sintered body is caused by the effect of free metallic Cr.
