Abstract

1514171 Carbon bodies; silicon carbide UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 24 Dec 1974 [11 Jan 1974] 01518/74 Heading C1A A porous carbon body is obtained by producing one or more fibres from pitch, arranging the fibre(s) to form the porous body, fusing the fibre(s) to itself or another at regions where the fibre(s) come into contact with itself or another fibre, and heating the porous body to carbonize the fibres. Carbideforming material such as silicon may be added to the pitch prior to fibre production to produce a carbide phase. A material such as alumina or zirconia my be incorporated into the pitch to form a non-conductive phase on heating. The carbonized fibre(s) may be coated with pyrolitic carbon, silicon carbide, or silicon nitride, by pyrolytic deposition or by flowing a reactive fluid, such as silane and ammonia, over the matrix. In an Example, a porous silicon carbide body is made from a mixture of pitch and silicon.
