Abstract
1457757 Si impregnated carbon fibre/carbon composite DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 19 Nov 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 55242/73 Heading C1A Carbon fibre/carbon composite materials are treated by immersing the material partially or wholly in molten silicon. Immersion in the Si is preferably held at or just above its melting point (i.e., 1450-1550‹ C.) for a period sufficient to convert the C matrix to one composed essentially of SiC and Si. Alternatively immersion may be just sufficient in duration to allow Si to penetrate the C matrix without formation of SiC; the latter may be produced by a subsequent thermal treatment in the absence of molten Si. In an example, carbon fibre/carbon composites were prepared having either crossply or unidirectional fibre orientation by coating high strength fibres with a phenolic resin, laying the coated fibres in a mould to yield the desired fibre orientation and heating the moulded shape at 800-900‹ C. in N 2 to carbonize the resin: xylene is used to build-up the C matrix. The Si impregnation is carried out at 1450-1550‹ C. for 30 min. in vacuo: the C composites took up 10-39 wt. per cent of Si depending on fibre orientation. Density and mechanical properties of the Si treated composites are detailed.
